Saved and Made in the U.S.A.

This is a great idea that recycles materials normally thrown into landfills and which do not decompose.

The name of a “green” Milford, Connecticut company owned by Dayan Moore is gg2g. What does that stand for? Well it’s brilliant actually it’s “Green goods 2 give, green goods to get.” Dayan is known to her friends as “Day” and she’s been trying to save the planet since she was in high school as noted in an old black and white photo below of her Ecology Club.

gg2g was started about five years ago with a partner, but now it’s Day’s to lead into the future and it looks bright for the young company. Day is the recipient of an Eileen Fisher Supporting Women Grant. Day was among  four who received the honor of the more than one thousand entries. Day told me it was the first grant she ever wrote so she was thrilled.

The grant allows her to take all of the billboards she’s inherited, thanks to a friend who owns a billboard company and who is all about “green” and cut them and wash them and turn them into colorful recycled gems.

The heavy material is sewn on heavy duty sewing machines. Day pointed out it’s tough to find such seamstresses these days. Back in the day in industrial Connecticut, it would have been much easier.

She has designed totes and purses and wine bags and belts and is working with other materials too that are more pliable. The linings for the purses also are materials that have been cast aside.

Day is branching out into home goods, making pillows and footstools and cushions for chairs and soon she wants move into clothing.

Day is one talented gal, along with her “green” company she’s also a painter. Her medium is oil and wax. The wax of course gives her seascapes texture and a little lustre. I told her work water reminded me of my favorite place on the planet which is the island of Santorini, Greece. Her eyes lit up and she told me about the two months she had spent there long ago.

I have an acquaintance on the island who is opening up a design shop in the town of Oia, and of course I’ve already written him to see if  he might like to carry her work in the place I call paradise.
