TIP=UCONN’S Technology Incubation Program

Have you been to the University of Connecticut’s Avery Point campus lately? It is gorgeous, the site of an old U.S. Coast Guard station, it has a mansion and boats bobbing up and down on the water and a brand new Marine Sciences building.

When you go to the web site you’ll hear waves, wow!

I was there the other day to chat with John Hanson about UCONN’s Technology Incubation Program or “TIP.”

It’s a program in which young companies can enter be guided and helped over the course of about three years and hopefully then spun out into the state to stand on their own and prosper.

There are two other such Tip programs and they are at UCONN’s Health Center and on the main Storr’s campus.

The program provides lab space for research and development, opportunities to collaborate with UCONN researchers and access to the school’s library and computer network and on and on.

This is a win-win situation for companies to gain real knowledge before they fly on their own and for the state to be able to harness and keep this expertise.
