It doesn’t matter how many times I have been to, or driven by the Goodspeed Opera House, that the word “majestic” doesn’t pop into my head. The 1876 historic building is such a gem along the scenic Connecticut River.

Goodspeed Musicals is home to some of the finest shows put on a stage, so good, that some have gone onto Broadway.

The theater currently is in the throes of building gorgeous places for which the actors will stay which will draw more huge names to their stage.

Currently “Carnival” is playing. I had the privelege of going way up in the multi-story theater to see what was going on in wardrobe and in the wig department. The costumes in the show are designed and made right at Goodspeed. The theater has one of the largest costuming departments in the country. Everything from “unmentionables to huge ball gowns are in stock. When you’re on the stage here, you’re dressed from top to bottom in authentic garb.

There are so many nooks and crannies in this building, and each room has a million stories to tell.

This intimate theater makes you feel like you’re part of the show because you are so close to the actors.

Goodspeed Musicals is in the tiny town of East Haddam,  Connecticut which is historic in its own right. When you head up there, take some time to drive around and get a feel for this place along the Connecticut River.

Leading up to the main house of the theater is a grand staircase which you see in this post, a real turn of the century charmer.

As you investigate around the building there are wonderful memories, photos of great theatrical moments gone by, make sure you take the time to do that.

A peak inside the theater in off times you’ll of course see the ghost light illuminated on the stage. It keeps the ghosts away or perhaps entertains the ones who are already around. All theaters have one.

If you’ve never been to the Goodspeed to see a musical, do yourself a favor and check out their schedule and go. It’s a great place to take children too.

Their sister stage, the Norma Terris Theater in Chester is also worth a trip, established in 1984, musicals are put on their as well.

If you’re an aspiring actor who loves to sing, you’ll want to inquire about Goodspeed’s educational department, might be something there for you to take your talents to the next level.

We’re lucky to have Goodspeed as our neighbor.
