The Blue Oar On The Banks Of The Connecticut River
The Blue Oar Restaurant along the beautiful banks of the Connecticut River in Haddam, Connecticut is a little slice of heaven.
In business for 15 years, it’s a destination for boaters in Connecticut, though according to owner, Jody Reilly, most drive to this Shangri La.
It sits next to a small marina and gravel parking lot. It started out as a tiny storage building with a couple of picnic tables and people just started coming more and more every summer. It’s a seasonal restaurant, open around Mother’s Day and closes around Columbus Day. On some days the Blue Oar serves up to 600 people. Get this, they have never advertised, don’t have a web site either, it’s ambiance made it a destination on its own. How often does that happen?
There are roughly 170 seats with a maximum time of two hours at the table. They don’t take reservations, with what I just told you they don’t have to, and they only except cash, so just know that up front.
Boats of all sizes pull up to have lunch or dinner and that includes yachts and seaplanes too. Celebrities have eaten here too including the late American writer and investigative journalist, Dominik Dunne, former Senator Chris Dodd, and actress and television host, Ricki Lake.
The Connecticut River is beautiful as you cruise along it and this just happens to be a hot spot to pull over and sit a spell. It’s a popular place for wedding rehearsals dinners, birthdays and anniversaries. The menu is to die for, yep they have lobster rolls, and don’t even get me started on the desserts here. If you would like a glass a wine with lunch or dinner you have to bring your own. It’s one of those hideaways that once discovered you just keep coming back.

You will have to call the restaurant, they may now be closed for the season, but they also own Simon’s Market Place in Chester you could call there.
